There was an aisle devoted to sci-fi books on the 1st floor compact shelving, everything was moved. Did they get put into one place or just into different areas now?
Library response:
Our sci-fi collection that used to be housed on the 1st floor consists of books in the PZ 2001 call number range. These call numbers have been moved to their temporary location in the 3C pod. This is located on the northeast side of the third floor, at the very end of the pod after GVs. This is due to the library-wide shift taking place. If you need any help locating this area please ask at the Information Desk located in the lobby. Let me know if I can be of further assistance. Rebecca Blakiston, Materials Access Team

I think the library has to change hold book policy. I recalled a book and I had an email on Saturday about hold available. But when I went to take the book on sunday, the book was lost. Nobody could find it. I think you have to change places of hold books near an assistance who is resposible of these books. I had an open book exam and it was an important book for my exam. Thanks.
Library response: I apologize for the fact that this item was unavailable when you needed it. We have looked into a variety of approaches to managing holds and in our previous experience there were just as many problems with hold items not being readily available in a closed stacks environment as there are in an open stacks environment.Additionaly, the library no longer has the staffing to mediate checking out hold items. Again, I apologize for your negative experience. Travis Teetor, Materials Access Team

Smoking outside the library causes pollution inside the library. In going by the front desk, I often notice that it smells like cigarette smoke in the front area. This means that the employees working in that area are being exposed to second-hand smoke over long periods of the day. Also, all of those walking into and through that area are being exposed to smoke.
A similar situation occurs in the Integrated Learning Center courtyard right outside the lower area of Information Commons as well. Both areas (outside the front doors and in the ILC courtyard) are relatively closed in, so that with low-wind conditions, there is often a build-up of smoke that pollutes everyone in the outside area and inside as well, since the smoke comes in through the open doors. Sometimes, the situation inside is worsened by wind blowing directly into the doors.
This is to urge the university to ban smoking in the entire open areas around the library doors, and to enforce the policy with employees checking the areas and reporting regularly. Thanks for your consideration of this matter.
Library response:
The Library has taken action to move all cigarette receptacles more than 25 feet from the entrances. This complies with ARS 36-601.01 which is posted on the signs the University has placed on all doors. The sign includes a phone number for reporting violations. The problem you site is probably due to individuals approaching the doors before extinguishing their cigarettes. It is not possible for us to find all patrons who smoke as they approach the Library doors. If you find a violation, you should call the number on the 'No Smoking' signs. Jim Fromm, Building Manager

it's time to crunch and do that final exam...hmm you've covered my favorite spot to sit and study and use my laptop with a copy machine. Grrr.
I like to study in the big room behind the express document center but there are only 3 places in that room to plug in a laptop and do work...but now you've put a copy machine on one of them. Put it somewhere else where there aren't tables and chairs.
My second place to study is to the right of the main entry where the big tables are...but there are many desks without power outlets...yet if you look at the windows there are is about one power outlet ever couple of feet but there are NO desks next to them. Why don't you put desks perpendicular to the windows so people can use the power outlets. Then people don't have to fight over tables with power outlets.
Library response:
We were able to move the table back by the electrical outlet in the area behind the Express Document Center. While we thought that your idea to move study desks close to the windows and the outlets in Research West area was a great one, we were not allowed to do this. I am hopeful that we can examine that space and use it more wisely in the future. Thanks for the idea. Vicki Mills, Undergraduate Services Team.

I CAN"T USE THE COMPUTERS BECAUSE THE PRINT IS TOO SMALL NO MATTER HOW MANY TIMES I COMPLAIN NOTHING GETS DONE I CAN"T READ THE POP UP BOXES OR SEE TO TYPE IN AN URL MAKER IT LARGER DOESN"T HELP WITH THESE THINGS THE DEFAULT TYPE NEEDS TO BE LARGER TO ACCOMODATE THE OLDER PATRONS. IT IS OUTRAGEOUS THAT YOU STILL REFUSE TO ADDRESS THIS ISSUE!
Library response:
Please quit sending these messages through the library feedback page. We have answered your complaint multiple times. If you are using a library computer and having trouble with it, please come to the Information Commons Reference desk or the Science Reference desk and ask us for help. I think we can be more helpful to you if we can see the problem you are having. Vicki Mills, Undergraduate Services Team

I think you should keep a PAPER format of the KEY WEST CITIZEN newspaper. It is one of the best local newspapers in America. In fact the town was recommendet by MIT professor Chomsky. I know it is kind of the opposite to what you might find in Arizona. But this is a good thing and truly this is CLASS in NEWSPAPER culture.
Library response:
Thank you for your suggestion that the library subscribe to the newspaper, Key West Citizen. The newspapers that the library focuses on subscribing to in paper format are primarily Arizona newspapers, some newspapers of national scope (e.g., The New York Times, The Los Angeles Times), and some representative papers from other countries. We have had to cut back on our print subscriptions, but provide access to many newspapers through our online database subscriptions, including Access World News and Lexis-Nexis Academic. Many newspapers, including Key West Citizen, provide access to some current articles on their websites, so the library will not be subscribing to it in print. Mary Feeney, Social Sciences Team

I am trying to find out how I can purchase a couple of cds or tapes of Alex Jose and his Hickiwan Band. Can you help me?
Library response:
I called Canyon Records up in Phoenix and this recording has been out of print for a while now. I was even referred to a retail store that the lady at Canyon Records thought might still have it, but no luck. I understand, however, that Special Collections provides a service whereby someone can have a recording copied for a fee by a vendor called Ping Pong Media. please forward this to the person who makes your "library hours of operation" phone message. i have called this answering machine message for years. it is too long! it is 5 minutes long! you should be able to say the same information in 2 minutes. here are some suggestions: skip the redundancies (valid cat card after 1 a.m.
is said at least 3 times). make the WHOLE thing as short as possible.
MOST of all, say the YEAR of the semester ONCE at the beginning of the message. repeating the year after EACH AND EVERY date that is said is completely useless. i get it, it's the year 2007, 500 times.
if you say it once at the beginning, people are not going to forget what year it is by the middle of the message. keep in mind, there are only about 4 dates that are exceptions to your regular hours, shouldn't take that long to say. fix please.
Library response:
Your comment about the hours message has been forwarded to the staff who are responsible for creating it. Your suggestions for streamlining the message are useful. Unfortunately, we are trying to cover hours for multiple libraries with multiple exceptions and the message does tend to get very long and confusing. We will try to work on ways to make it shorter. I would recommend that the Science Library dept. (if it's within their budget) subscribe to the journal "Zootaxa" (Magnolia Press), and have it as an online link to the library database. This has recently begun publication in the past few years, and is a wealth of knowledge of newly described species.
Library response:
This suggestion was forwarded to the appropriate Science librarian for consideration. Vicki Mills, Undergraduate Services Team

Hi,
I m a research associate in the AME department and I use your services to find papers online. Unfortunately, I didn't succeed to access to papers from the following journals: Experiments in fluids amd Journal of Physics E: Scientific Instruments.
both the library and the journals websites confirmed that I m allowed to view the paper but when I ask for te .pdf file, it open a blank page.
I was able to obtain paper from others publications so I m wondering what s the problem.
Thanks for your help.
Library response: It would help to know what year or volume you were trying to access in each of the titles below. I was able to get the pdfs open in Experiments in fluids -- so that appears to be working correctly in the library at this time. I was also able to open articles in the Journal of Physics ... although our online access for this title is only Jan. 01, 1968- Dec. 31, 1989. But I didn't try every year and volume, so sometimes we can't get access to the full run of years that we say we can. So if you can give me the exact articles you were trying to open, I can test them here to see if they work in the library. (He got back to me with specific information and I was able to find the article he needed and send it to him). Vicki Mills, Undergraduate Services Team
