Guide to Using DOQQs from the ARIA Site
DOQQS & ArcView
If you'll be downloading DOQQs in the Library, we recommend that you use ArcGIS software. You can find this software in the Main Library and Science-Engineering Library's Information Commons.
First follow the instructions for Searching for finding and viewing DOQQs from the ARIA site. When you are ready to download an DOQQ, click the Download button within the ARIA site. You'll see a box to input your email address; enter your email address and click "Continue." (If you haven't already done so, when first visiting the ARIA site you may need to fill out a User Registration form in order to continue.) See
Next you'll see a screen listing what files you can download (e.g., *.tif and *.hdr).
The *.tif files are the image files you'll want to download and the *.hdr files include the metadata information. Right-click on the file link, then left-click on Save Link As... If you are on the Main Library GIS computer, save the file to the g:\temp directory. In the Science Library, save it to the c:\temp directory. Be patient, as it may take a while to download some of the larger files. |
| Now you're ready to open your file withing ArcView. Assuming you're at one of the Library's GIS stations, exit Netscape and double-click the ArcView icon on the desktop. It looks like this: |
Next the following ArcView screen comes up. You'll want to open up a new View, so just click on OK. |
In order to open your DOQQ file in ArcView, click Yes to add data to the View. |
First make sure to choose Image Data Source under "Data Source Types" in the lower left-hand corner, circled at left. Using the three menus shown, navigate to where you saved your DOQQ file. This will be either on the C:\temp directory (Main Library) or the G:\temp directory (Science Library). Click OK when ready. |
Now the View window opens up. Click on the box next to the file name to "turn on" the image. |
Now you can view the image in different ways (e.g., zoomed in, pictured), add layers, etc. |
To manipulate your DOQQ file in other ways, explore the buttons and menus at the top of the window or consult the ArcView online help or the print manual at the GIS stations.
