Basic Search
1. Click on JSTOR (Electronic Journals) to open JSTOR.
2. When JSTOR opens, click on “SEARCH”
3. You are put into the “easy search” page. Review the QUICK TIPS:
below the search box
4. Search Hints:
- Phrase Searching
To search for an exact phrase, use double quote marks around the phrase:
"women’s suffrage"
"world war I" - Wildcards
Using a question mark (?) allows you to replace up to one letter. If you search wom?n you will find woman and women. - Multiple Characters
Use an asterisk (*) to match more than one letter. A search on bird* will find bird, birding, birdman, birds, and other words that start with bird. - Proximity Operators
JSTOR allows you to find terms that are within a specific number of words from each other using the tilde (~) as a proximity operator. To search runaway and slaves within ten words of each other, you would construct the following query:
“runaway slave*”~10
5. You will get a list of "hits" (articles that match your search query. For example:
| Fugitive Slaves and Free Society: The Case of Brazil Thomas Flory The Journal of Negro History > Vol. 64, No. 2 (Spring, 1979), pp. 116-130 Stable URL: http://links.jstor.org/sici?sici=0022-2992%28197921%2964%3A2%3C116%3AFSAFST%3E2.0.CO%3B2-E Article Information | Page of First Match | Print | Download | Save Citation |
