Getting Materials From Citations

I've found citations to articles. Now how do I get the articles?

1) Full text in database

Some databases have full-text articles available in them. For example, the Library Literature database includes some access to full-text. If you see this icon in a record in Library Literature icon for View HTML Full Text the full text of the article is available online. Click on that link to view the article.

2) Full text not in database - check Article Linker

If the full text of the article is not available directly through a database, click on the title of the article to look at the full record. There you will see a link for Article Linker:

Article Linker - Search for Article icon

Click on this link, and another window will open with information about how to get the article.

OPTIONS WILL INCLUDE:

a) Online through another database

Online access may be available through one of our other databases. For example, if direct access to an article is available, you will see the Article Linker window open when you click on the link:

Then, the article will appear in that window:

Article Linker window-article access

If direct access to the article is not available, you will see a window like the one below. Here, you can link to the journal online and locate the article from there:

b) Check catalog - library has print copy

If the article is not available online, you will get a screen like this, which tells you "Sorry, this article was not found online." Below that are listed different options for getting the article some other way:

You should try Step 1 - Search the Library Catalog. This steop allows you to search the library catalog to see if the library owns a print copy of the journal. Click on the "by ISSN."

If the library has the journal, you will see a catalog record for it. In this example, you can see that the library has this journal in the Main Library. The record provides you the call number and information about what volumes we have.

Catalog record

Since the library owns this item, you have two options:

1. Come in to the library to make a copy

OR

2. Request that the article you want to be delivered to you through Express Documents (Document Delivery). See more information about Express Documents in 3) Requesting materials below.

c) Check catalog - library does NOT have print or electronic copy

The library may not have the exact volume, issue, or date of the article you want, OR the library may not have any print or electronic access to the journal, for example:

no match in catalog screen

In this case, you may submit an Interlibrary Loan request to have the library search for this article from another library and deliver it to you. See more information about Interlibrary Loan in 3) Requesting materials below.

3) Requesting materials

a) Library has print copy of article, but not electronic copy

If the journal is not available electronically, but the library has a print copy, what do I do?

Come in to the library and make a copy.

OR

Request document delivery through Express Documents. Express Documents (Document Delivery) is a service provided by the UA Library to deliver materials owned by the UA Library to UA students, faculty, and staff. Articles and book chapters delivered to you electronically are free of charge (there are fees for delivery of books). Additional information about document delivery is available on the Express Documents (Document Delivery) page. To submit your document delivery request, click on the "Logon to the Express Documents request form." You will need your CATCard number to make requests.

b) Library does NOT have print copy NOR electronic access of article

If the library does not have the journal online or in print, what do I do?

Request interlibrary loan. Interlibrary Loan (ILL) is a service provided by the UA Library that provides access to materials not owned by the UA Library to UA students, faculty, and staff. Additional information about ILL is available on the Interlibrary Loan page. There is no fee for UA faculty, students, or staff to use ILL. To request items through ILL, click on "Logon to ILLiad." You will need your CATCard number to make requests.
