Linguistic Society of America
Information about the Society, its meetings, full text of the monthly bulletin.
Originally know as the Summer Institute for Linguistics this organization grew of one man’s concern for people speaking lesser-known languages that lacked written alphabets. Originally from the U.S.A., William Cameron Townsend moved to Guatemala to live cross-culturally in a Mayan village. There he learned a Cakchiquel language, began language and educational development, and promoted Bible translation. After years in Guatemala, he expanded his vision to many similarly disadvantaged peoples of the world. Today SIL International is a faith-based organization that studies, documents, and assists in developing the world’s lesser-known languages. They maintain the Ethnologue data base.
SSILA Society for the Study of Indigenous Languages of the Americas
SSILA was founded in December 1981 as the international scholarly organization representing American Indian linguistics, and was incorporated in 1997. Membership in SSILA is open to all those who are interested in the scientific study of the languages of the native peoples of North, Central and South America. The Society has approximately 900 members, more than a third of them residing outside the United States.
