MAJOR DATABASES
Biological and biomedical information. Coverage: 1992 - present.
BRENDA Enzyme database
(BRaunschweig ENzyme DAtabase) is a collection of data on enzymes drawn from the primary literature and classified according to the EC system of the Enzyme Nomenclature Committee (IUBMB). It includes biochemical and molecular information on thousands of enzymes from many different organisms. Searchable catagories of data include: nomenclature reaction & specificity functional parameters, organism related information, enzyme structure isolation & preparation stability, disease & references application & engineering. Other features which might be of interest include: a substructure search feature, a taxonomy-tree browser, ECTree browser, and amino acid sequence search.
Chemical Abstracts (SciFinder Scholar)
Chemical Abstracts: 1907 - present
CASREACT: 1907 - present
CAS Registry: 1957 - present
Entrez - Cross Database Search
Simultaneously search multiple life sciences databases at the National Center for Biotechnology Information (NCBI).
Medline is available via three different interfaces:
Medline is the National Library of Medicine's premier bibliographic database of international biomedical literature, providing comprehensive information on every aspect of medicine, biomedical research and health care. Coverage: 1950-present.
PubChem provides information on the biological activities of small molecules. It is a component of NIH's Molecular Libraries Roadmap Initiative.
Comprehensive coverage of the chemical literature, including patents. Includes searchable chemical structures and reactions. See SciFinder Scholar page from Chemical Abstracts Service.

TAIR - The Arabidopsis Information Resource
TAIR maintains a database of genetic and molecular biology data for the model higher plant Arabidopsis thaliana. Data available from TAIR includes the complete genome sequence along with gene structure, gene product information, metabolism, gene expression, DNA and seed stocks, genome maps, genetic and physical markers, publications, and information about the Arabidopsis research community.
Web of Science (Science Citation Index Expanded)
Multidisciplinary database through cited authors. Coverage: 1990 - present.
NCBI DATABASES
The Basic Local Alignment Search Tool (BLAST) finds regions of local similarity between sequences. It can also be used to infer functional and evolutionary relationships between sequences as well as help identify numbers of gene families.
GEO (Gene Expression Omnibus) Databases
A gene expression/molecular abundance repository supporting MIAME (Minimum Information About a Microarray Experiment) compliant data submissions, and a curated, online resource for gene expression data browsing, query and retrieval.
A collection of sequences from several sources, including GenBank, DDBJ (DNA Data Bank of Japan) and EMBL (European Molecular Biology Laboratory). These three partners make up the International Nucleotide Sequence Database Collaboration, which was established to promote and facilitate the gathering and publishing of nucleotide sequences internationally.
A collection of protein sequences compiled from a variety of sources, including SwissProt, PIR, PRF, PDB, and translations from annotated coding regions in GenBank and RefSeq. This resource can be used in conjunction with visualization and comparative analysis tools such as NCBI’s 3D structure viewer, Cn3D.
Database of Single Nucleotide Polymorphisms.
The Molecular Modeling Database (MMDB) contains 3-D macromolecular structures, including proteins and polynucleotides. MMDB contains over 28,000 structures and is linked to the rest of the NCBI Databases, including sequences, bibliographic citations, taxonomic classifications and sequence and structure neighbors. 3-D structures can be analyzed using NCBI’s 3D structure viewer, Cn3D. The viewer has the capability of simultaneously displaying structure, sequence, and alignment, and now has powerful annotation and alignment editing features.
ADDITIONAL DATABASES
Brings to the Web a uniquely valuable aggregation of the full-texts of high-impact bioscience research journals. Most of BioOne’s titles are published by small societies and non-commercial publishers, and, until now, have been available only in printed form.
Developed and is maintained by the staff of the National Reference Center for Bioethics Literature. Materials on this Web site are copyrighted and made available to individual researchers.
