Graduate Student Carrels - Long Term Loan


Regulations

Eligibility

To be eligible for a study carrel you must be one of the following:

All carrel assignments are based on Library research needs of PhD students and faculty.  Applicants must be currently enrolled or employed with the university. The University Library reserves the right to reassign unused carrels.

Loan Rules

Each semester notification of occupancy of will be sent to you via email toward the end of Fall, Spring and Summer sessions. Notification will not be sent to your campus or home address. Each carrel occupant must respond in order ensure their carrel is maintained. If no response is received by the date specified in the email, the Library will assume that the carrel is no longer needed and will begin the process of assigning that carrel to another user.

Carrels are non-renewable after the expiration date. Reapplication is necessary to obtain a carrel past the expiration date.

When the carrel assignment terminates, you will be notified by email and you must remove your belongs by the date specified. Items left in the carrel will be removed and the door code will be changed. Personal items removed from study carrels will be taken to Lost and Found, located in the Express Document Center on the first floor.

Once assigned, room changes will not be accommodated except for extenuating circumstances and only if a vacant carrel is available.

Sharing carrels is permitted. However, carrel-mates must also fill out an application. Only those legitimately holding carrel access codes will get renewal and expiration notices. Carrel holders are responsible for notifying anyone else sharing a carrel and responsible for any items removes when door codes are changed.

Responsibilities

The Library and University assume no responsibility for materials left in study carrels.The Library advises that you do not leave personal items inside the carrels; including laptops, cell phones and music players. Study carrel users leave personal items inside the carrels at their own risk.

Eating, drinking and smoking are not permitted in carrels. Also, covering the door window is not permitted. Library Staff must be able to visually check each carrel upon the closing of the library building. Study carrels are ONLY available for use during operating hours of the library.

Failure to abide by these rules will result in carrel privileges being revoked.

Library materials left in carrels must be checked out. If not checked out, the material will be removed from the carrel. Non-circulating materials cannot be kept within the study carrels.

Carrels will be checked periodically for Library materials. If unchecked Library material is found within a carrel, carrel privileges will be revoked.

Adjacent carrels are in use – please be courteous and maintain minimum noise levels.

Failure to observe the regulations listed above may result in forfeiture of the right to use a carrel.

Confidentiality

Carrel assignments are confidential. Library Staff cannot assume paging responsibilities and will not direct others to your carrels or share keypad codes.

Most carrels are equipped with an Ethernet connection. In addition, wireless internet is available throughout the Library.
